Change of Hours

Today is the last Tuesday Inky Hot Mess will be open for awhile. We will still be open Wednesday through Friday 11 am - 5pm and Saturday 11am - 3pm.

We will now be open on Mondays and Tuesdays by appointment only! You will need to call the shop at 315-325-4554 during our regular business hours to set up your appointment. Appointments are available between the hours of 10am and 7pm. Appointments must be scheduled at least 3 days in advance.

We will wait up to 15 minutes for you to arrive. If after 15 minutes your party does not show, we will close the shop and cancel the appointment. For example, if your party's appointment is at 3pm, then Inky Hot Mess will be open until 3:15pm. If your party arrives at 3:10pm, then you are free to shop until your hearts are content. If your party shows up at 3:20pm, we will be closed. If we end up with a great deal of no shows, we will have to rethink this new opportunity....please do not make us do that!

We know many people work during that day and just can't get to the shop during our business hours. Making an appointment for you and your friends solves this issue!

There is no minimum number of people needed to schedule an appointment. Seriously, you can come and shop by yourself or with 20 friends. There is no minimum that must be spent. There is no fee for the appointment either.

Our website is also open for business! Our website is inkyhotmess.com. We are adding new items to it every day. It will take some time to get everything from the shop activated. We have over 3,500 unique items in our shop! And new items are always arriving.

Ranger Station

The Ranger Station has been completed!!

What's the Ranger Station? The Ranger Station was created by Inky Hot Mess as a Ranger lover's paradise. All of the products we carry from Ranger and their affiliated designers have all been relocated and are now on display all together. They are no longer arranged throughout the shop. Everything is all together! The photo above is a sneak peek.....that is not everything! And nothing that was announced at CHA is in this photo.

Who are the affiliated designers? Peeps you've probably heard of - Tim Holtz, Dylusions by Dyan Reaveley, Studio 490 Wendy Vecchi, and Dina Wakley Media. Late last year, Ranger announced a new partnership with Ice Resin. Ice Resin looks to be lots of mixed media jewelry....the kind you make! I'll be looking more into them in the up coming weeks. If you would like Ice Resin to be stocked at Inky Hot Mess, give us a shout out!

Ranger CHA Release Dates

So as you're probably aware......CHA was a few weeks ago....CHA is THE tradeshow for our industry. Happens every January and sometimes in July.

Ranger, Tim Holtz, Studio 490 Wendy Vecchi, Dina Wakley Media, and Dylusions by Dyan Reaveley all had some major product announcements. I shared lots of things from CHA on our Facebook.

Well, I am happy to say I have received the list of product releases and when the products are officially being released......Some good news...January will be a light release month.....Some bad news.....February is release HEAVY.....like get a new credit card kind of release month......yeah it's that crazy! The other bad news is that the products introduced at CHA are set to release January through May! Yuppers, some of these products won't be out until May! As in 4 months from now....The good news is that gives us time to find a part time job or 3 so we can get all these new goodies.

A few things I learned from watching a ton of videos from CHA during my sick day.....Yup, I was plopped on the couch trying not to pass out again.....I clocked myself good the night before when I passed out. We aren't 100% sure what caused it, but it wasn't any fun so says the lump on my head! :( And the dizziness is for the birds!!!!

Perfect Pearls Mist Sprays have been retired!!!! I'm soooooo bummed! We've been using a bunch of these in the Technique Tags workshops. There is sort of a replacement for them....Mica Sprays....there's only 12. Boo!

This year Sizzix retired about 60 dies from Tim Holtz. He didn't even know they were retiring! The guy doesn't even get a say in it......bummer....So the lesson he had was if you see a die you want, get it within a few months. It may not be available after then. He mentioned the ice skate die. People wanted it and he said it's gone; that was last holiday. I had no idea that many dies are literally one season and then they're gone! I'm sure lots of people don't know this either. Big bummer!

Ranger is testing Mini Distress Sprays. Same product. Smaller bottle. Lower in price.

Ranger is also testing the Distress Paints. The 12 colors released last year will be available with flip caps. The flip caps are available in a pack of 4 or 5. We have them on order. The flip caps are in place of the dauber top.

Some details about the flip top caps... The cap has a notch for for your thumb to flip it open. It locks open....it won't snap back and close on your finger while you're pouring paint....that's NEVER fun! The tip is angled so the paint doesn't ooze everywhere. The cap also has like a peg in it that goes into the tip. You have squeeze the bottle a little to let the paint out. These caps are air tight and leak proof! Good to know for traveling with these.

Here's what's coming and which month....there not exact dates yet....and it will also depend on where stores are in the ordering que when they get their goodies....The huge companies - we all know who they are - will get theirs first......pfffft to them. :D No hard feelings, right? IHM will be one of those guys someday, right? ;)

Winter Cards

Did you miss our Winter Card Making Workshop? Well, you can still view the cards! I'm here to share them with you today.

The first card we made used an embossing folder from Echo Park. The stitched banner tags are from a die set from Taylored Expressions. The stamped saying is from Taylored Expressions. The polka dot paper is from Echo Park. The cardstock is by The Paper Mill Store.

I love these snowmen! They are from Echo Park. Normally, we don't sell individual sheets of paper, but we have a few of these left over. They are hiding so if you would like to purchase them, please ask. The red background with circles is the backside of the snowmen. We used some grey twine from Doodlebug Design and iridescent sequins from Darice. The tag and stamped saying are from Taylored Expressions.

This embossing folder is from Echo Park. The snowflakes were cut out with a die set from Lawn Fawn. This cardstock is from The Paper Mill Store.

This is the last card we made. The polka dot papers are from Echo Park. The little banners were punched out of the blue cardstocks we used on the other cards. The twine is swimming pool doodle twine from Doodlebug Design. And the cute snowman is from Taylored Expressions.

All of the cardstock and card bases are also available at Inky Hot Mess. All of the products used to make these cards are currently in stock as well.

Hey what do you know? It's Wednesday again! Our Wednesday Sale this week is on embossing folders. All embossing folders are 20% off. Right now, we have embossing folders from Echo Park, Carta Bella, Taylored Expressions, Crafter's Companion, Project Life, American Crafts, Darice, Tim Holtz, and others.

This sale is limited to stock on hand. Discount cannot be applied to previous purchases, special orders, website orders, or Etsy orders.

Website: New Shopping Cart

I spent my days off working on the "new and improved" Square shopping cart. Unfortunately, it did not provide the functions we need. It seems like it's really designed for places selling a handful of items. If you've ever set foot in Inky Hot Mess, you know we don't have a handful of items. We have over 3,000 different products in stock!

So off to research shopping carts I went. I found one that I am really liking. I have started creating a new online shopping experience! This shopping cart is from a major company who provides shopping cart services to huge companies including Toyota, Martha Stewart, and Payless. Crazy, right?

This new shopping cart is about 150 million times better than our old one! Now, it will take some time to get our products loaded, but I have already begun to add a few. I'm really enjoying the new functions.

What's new?

Real time calculated shipping! You will have your choice of shipping options with the USPS, FedEx, and UPS.

You will now be able to shop by brand, category, and theme.

Everyone can sign up for our newsletter while online shopping in your flannel pjs, lime green fuzzy bunny slippers while chugging down a hot cup of coffee at 3 am when you just can't sleep because the wind is howling....oh wait that was this past weekend!

Our mobile site should be improved by about 1000%! I have been told that there were some serious issues with using the Square shopping cart on certain phones by customers. That did not make me happy! I know many of us use our phone for everything today.

So because of this new shopping cart, I will be taking the Square shopping cart down today. The new shopping cart should be up and running by the end of the week. It won't be full yet, but you'll get to see how fabulous it is!

Website Update

It appears that the shopping cart portion of our website has been updated by Square. Surprise! So this new and improved shopping cart will take us some time to get the kinks worked out and products reloaded. It's very different than the previous version. One new cool feature is that you can click on a category at the top and you'll be taken directly to that category. I've been playing around with it to see the new functionality.

A few categories have been updated. I'm hoping to get some more categories uploaded by the weekend. I am also working on the new Living Life release. Oh I could use a 36 hour day! Couldn't most of us?

New Vendors 2016

It's been 2016 for a few days now. And I've been doing some research. I'm looking to add some new vendors to Inky Hot Mess this year!

We definitely need some more stamp companies. We just can't get enough stamps! I know, I know we all have a bunch already yet we all keep adding to our collection. There's just so many cute ones out there.

We will be adding stamps from DeNami Designs this month!

There's a new paper company called Photo Play Paper Co. We will be adding their collections this month as well. One of the owners was with Echo Park for years so you know the collections will be awesome!

More products for your Minc, Cricut, and Silhouette are coming! Don't have one of these machines and want one? You can special order one from us! Did you know when you place a special order you receive a 10% discount?

New dies from Sizzix are coming. We have ordered several dies from Tim Holtz. There are other Sizzix dies as well in our order. Not sure if we will receive this order in January due to CHA (the massive industry tradeshow this month).

More kits! Want to make your own journal? We will be putting together a variety of journal kits. Many of them will have vintage pieces in them!

We will be creating more scrapbooking kits as well. In our kits, you'll find an instruction sheet with photos, an assortment of 12"X12" scrapbook papers, 12"x12" cardstock, and embellishments. Each kit is different! We will be offering a variety of themes.

Lots is coming in January and throughout the year! Looks like 2016 will be a wicked awesome time at Inky Hot Mess!

2016 Has Arrived!

I hope everyone had a fantastic New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. My husband and I had a lovely dinner at the Antique Inn in Penn Yan on New Year's Eve. We're not big party people so this was perfect for us. I was so sad to drive by Seneca Farms and see it all dark! I really miss them during the winter. I can't get enough of their Loaded Baked Potato Soup. And their homemade ice cream! OMG!

Speaking of ice cream....for dessert my husband baked Nestle Tollhouse Cookies and made us ice cream sundaes with them. We watched Breakfast at Tiffany's. It was on Netflix and leaving. I had never seen it! Such a quirky movie. See we're wild and crazy people!!!

This type of thing is something I absolutely adore about the Finger Lakes. Many people say we're stuck back in time. I say what is wrong with that? People here really do shop local and care about their communities. We have very few chains in the region. Sure there are times I would love to have a Target closer by, but it hasn't killed me! I was spoiled when I lived in South Carolina as there was a Target less than 3 miles from my house. Almost everything there was a chain though....very few local shops and restaurants. That got very old and boring quickly.

I'm a relative newcomer to the Finger Lakes in many ways. My first visit to the region was in 2006.....it all started with a NASCAR race....Thank you Tony Stewart! Yup, he's my driver...has been for years...My first trip here was to Watkins Glen International to watch him race. He didn't win that race.....one of my other favorite drivers - Kevin Harvick - did. I still remember that race....I don't remember most and I've actually seen Tony win at Pocono and have ZERO memories of that race! UGH.

I'm the driver and my husband is the navigator. He loves maps and finding crazy ways to get from point a to point b. Taking a route off the beaten path is his thing....it's a great way to relax, not rush, and see what there is in the world. We are originally from the Albany area and I wanted to see a race at Watkins Glen since it was in our backyard. So we made it happen. We stayed in Cortland at a hotel the night before....we had no idea where Watkins Glen really was or what was nearby. We knew of Cortland because of the SUNY college and my husband's mother lived in Cortland as a child.

After the race, my husband asked how I wanted to drive home. Go the fast way back to the Capital Region or do some site seeing. I opted for the site seeing and both of us have been so happy with that decision....it was literally a life changing decision. Sounds crazy right? Well, 6 years later we moved to the Finger Lakes!

We drove around some lakes - no idea which ones - found some adorable towns....and then we hit it. We got to Skaneateles in the evening. We both died and went to heaven. We were blown away by the village. We're architecture and history geeks. We went for a walk out on the pier and decided right then and there to come back the next weekend to really see the village in the daylight.

We came back that next weekend.....and then started making weekend and day trips every month for over a year. Some months we came out 2 or 3 times! Looking back now, I can really see how we fell in love with the area.

In 2010, we had an opportunity to relocate to South Carolina. We built our dream house. I spent 6 weeks in SC to watch them build it. I missed spending my birthday with my husband. I barely made it home for Valentine's Day. I missed the day he broke both of his arms playing flag football....yup he broke both of his arms while I was away! I had several more trips to SC in March and April as construction was completely. In early April, we packed our house up onto a couple of moving trucks and loaded our vehicles with our pets. We drove for 2 days and closed on our new house.

I absolutely loved the house. I still do. I wish I could have picked it up and moved it.....moving a house isn't that easy unfortunately. We made some wonderful friends. I finally learned to quilt!! Something I had wanted to do for years. I had several groups of scrapbookers I cropped with and even went on weekend retreats every month. But I was sooooooo homesick. I didn't miss Albany. I missed New York. Missed the Finger Lakes. I missed the Adirondacks. I missed 4 seasons. I started making trips back to the FLX and NY every few months. We decided we would move back to NY as soon as we could...figuring it would be a few years.

Then it happened. Someone came looking for my husband. They wanted to hire him. There was a little snag. They preferred us to live in NY. After much negotiating, he took the job. We needed to figure out if we were going to deal with him commuting to the office in NY or move. We decided to move back to NY. We knew we didn't really want to move back to the Albany area. We chose the Finger Lakes!

We both came up for a few days to find a house. Found one the first day that we loved.....then the inspection happened and it all fell apart. The seller wasn't willing to negotiate.  Here we are 3 1/2 years later and that house is STILL on the market....for tens of thousands less than we offered.

My husband was back in SC when this all happened. I had 3 days left to find us a house. Quite the task. We started looking outside the Skaneateles area. Our decision came down to 2 houses. One in Onondaga and one in Geneva. The house in Onondaga was significantly cheaper and larger. It was on an incredibly busy street and not really in the FLX. It didn't have much character. Remember, we love old houses. So we went with the Geneva house. A few people know where I live.....we actually live on the same street! Seriously, there are 2 regular customers who live on my street and we don't live on anything like 20 or 14. Small world, right?

In September 2012, we closed on our house. We loaded all of stuff up again and drove north. I did the trip all in one day with our pets. I almost cried when I hit the PA/NY border. I stopped at a scenic pull off just outside of Watkins Glen on our lake - Seneca Lake - to stretch my legs and wake up. It was almost midnight at this point. I stood there looking at my lake in the moonlight. I couldn't believe it was real. It really happened. We got to move to the Finger Lakes after talking about it for 6 years. I couldn't believe all the water. We had major drought restrictions in South Carolina. Did you know that every lake in SC is manmade?! That still boggles my mind...I mean here we sit fortunate enough to be surrounded by water - the Finger Lakes, the Great Lakes, streams, ponds, etc...

We are home. HOME. That's a big word. My husband's company has since been purchased by a major international Fortune 100 company. There has ben rumors over the years about moving people around. We won't move. My husband would have to do that fun weekly commute thing or find a new job. He doesn't want to move either. We are HOME.

Wow, this was a long story about how I ended up here! So many people have asked that I thought I would share it.

This loooooong saga brings me to some new things for Inky Hot Mess in 2016...we will be introducing a couple of products that we design and have made. ALL will be Made in the USA....a few will be made right here in Geneva! We will be celebrating the Finger Lakes! And there will be some Adirondacks items added! The ADK items may be sold at some shops in the ADK. We will have to see. Some of the FLX items may also be sold at shops and wineries around the region. Time will tell!

I wish I could tell you what the products are, but I can't just yet. All of them won't be released at the same time. I can say that scrapbookers and card makers will be VERY happy!!!! wink wink....does that tell you anything?

Other things coming to Inky Hot Mess in 2016:

Ranger! We are adding a ton of products from Ranger including Tim Holtz, Dylusions by Dyan Reaveley, Dina Wakley Media, and Studio 490 Wendy Vecchi. By the end of the month, I'm hoping that phase 2 of the new Ranger Station will be completed.

We will be introducing new local artists! We have 2 artists now. Locally handmade items are doing wonderful at our shop. If you are a local artist and are interested in selling your pieces in our shop, please stop by!

More stationary and paper goods will be coming soon. Some party decor. Definitely some DIY home decor. There are some amazing things coming soon. CHA is the big industry trade show and it's happening next week. I'm already seeing new thing coming and wowee! These are exciting times in the land of paper.

Our January schedule is out! We are starting  a new series of workshops called 101. They are beginner workshops where you'll learn the basics of something new. You bring the supplies and I teach you how to use them. These workshops are 100% hands on! You do all the work so you learn the techniques and get to using all those fancy things you bought at 3 am because they looked so cool on HSN.....yeah we ALL have them....

We will have $5 Craft Day every Thursday. For 5 bucks, you can craft from 10am until 6pm. Preregistration is required....gotta make sure we have enough seats and I'm there to let you in the shop since we don't open until 11 am.

We are having a Crafty Saturday. For $40 you can get your craft on from 9am until 6pm. A warm lunch along with beverage is included. Everyone will also receive a goody bag. There will be a free make and take and door prizes. Preregistration is also required. Seating is LIMITED!!!!

What kind of crafts are invited to Craft Days? All crafts! You don't have to be a scrapbooker or card maker. You can do digital scrapbooking. You can knit, crochet, quilt, do origami...whatever floats your boat! Heck, you can wittle!

We also have our regular workshops featuring card making, scrapbooking, technique tags, and pocket scrapbooking. There is a winter banner and a love banner as well. Yes, preregistration is required. Tool Caddy Lists are on inkyhotmess.com.

Do you participate in One Little Word? I started last year. I don't exactly do it the way Ali Edwards intended, but I make it a part of my life. My word this year is create. I made a promise to myself that no matter what, I would take time at least once a week to create something. Now it can be something for the shop, but really the focus is on creating something for myself. So I have decided that Tuesday afternoons will be my day to create. I may create other days, but Tuesdays are my create time! So stop by on a Tuesday and see what I'm working on. You never know what will inspire you!

The February schedule will be out the end of the week. More workshops and craft days are sure to come!

If you are interested in attending a Ladies' Night, please let me know! What is Ladies' Night? We get together and create a mixed media canvas. We will provide hors d'oeuvres and beverages (the under 21 kind. if you want the over 21 kind, please speak to me and will work something out). What's a mixed media canvas? you get to paint with paint and ink. You will also get to stamp with paint and ink. Learn about some cool, fun messy stuff. Get out of the house! Go have some fun with some ladies! Ladies' Night would be a Friday night event....starting at 6 or 7 and lasting 2-3 hours. I really want to put one together or February, but I need to see how many ladies are interested.

Have you heard? In January, we will have our semi-annual clearance sale? I have already started pulling items for this sale....it's going to be huge...epic...the type of thing legends are made of....you know legendary paper crafters. :)

I think that's everything that's up my sleeve right now....but tomorrow there may be 20 new things. Who knows? So yeah 2016 is going to be awesome, filled with paper and fun! Go create something! And remember you can always bring in your creations and show me. I love seeing what everyone makes!

Hello 2016

Six months ago today, the doors to Inky Hot Mess opened! Our shop in downtown Geneva opened on July 1, 2015. These 6 months have flown by. This shop had been a dream of mine for over 10 years. I still have days where I look around the shop and can't believe it really happened and that I actually did it!

Many people said I was crazy. Scrapbooking is dead. No one makes anything anymore. I'm happy to say pfffft to those people. Sales in the shop have far exceeded my hopes. I have to thank you for this! Thank you just isn't enough.

This week a group of ladies came to Geneva from Binghamton just to come to Inky Hot Mess!!! That's a couple hours drive each way. They were so happy they made the trip. They told me how beautiful the shop is and that they have not seen one like it. I know I work very hard to keep our shop well stocked, but not overstocked. I personally like to be able to walk between racks and not be attacked by products and racks.....you know how many clothing stores are so stuffed full that the racks literally attack you? Yeah, I don't like that and find it difficult to shop. Seems like I'm not the only one...phew.

In 2016, there will be some changes to Inky Hot Mess. We feel like these are awesome changes! Living Life will be coming back this month. Personally, I'm ECSTATIC about this!!! It's my chance to get creative and design my own products. Each product is Made in the USA. Some products are made in Geneva. What other paper crafting company can say they have locally made products? Our products are NOT made overseas. I take great pride in this.

What is Living Life? Living Life is where Inky Hot Mess began as a company. Inky Hot Mess was my personal blog for many years. Living Life is our answer to pocket scrapbooking. What's pocket scrapbooking? It's a simple way of scrapbooking where you insert photos and journal cards into premade pocket page protectors. Project Life is the most popular pocket scrapbooking brand.

Living Life isn't just journal cards. We have a line of embellishments as well. In the past we have offered flair, wood veneers, cork shapes, and acrylic shapes. We will be adding new embellishments this year and a few other items....can't let the cat out of the bag just yet!

The January Living Life collection will feature stars. There will also be numerous embellishments to enhance you scrapbook layouts, cards, and art journals. Each month there will be at least one new Living Life collection. Some months there will be 2 or 3! We will also be introducing new products throughout the year. There are 3 products currently in the works....I can't say what they are just yet....but they are HUGE and exclusively designed and made for Inky Hot Mess.

In 2016, we will be expanding our Finger Lakes offerings....What's coming? More flair! Wood veneers. Some new products that are still under wraps. We have had many inquires about paper crafting items about the Finger Lakes. We're in a very popular tourist area. People literally come from all over the world to see our lakes and wines! This summer I met groups from The Netherlands, Germany, England, Japan, and Canada. It is fascinating talking with people from other countries. Amazing what you learn from them that you won't find in a textbook.

You may have noticed our Etsy shop is very active. A few weeks ago, we relaunched our Etsy shop. Why do we have an Etsy shop since we already have a website and the retail shop? We can now reach people all over country and the world! We can ship to other countries now. We can't do that with our website (there's all kinds of red tape with credit card processing stuff that I don't pretend to understand).

Tomorrow I will have another post about things new for 2016 at Inky Hot Mess!
